Don’t get trapped with an unresponsive online presence

Websites were once considered a commodity – the cherry on top of a well-established marketing strategy that showed just how relevant your company was. It wasn’t really something that businesses thought they needed just yet, it was simply nice to have if you could afford it.

A whole lot has changed with that.

Funnily enough, the majority of those old websites wouldn’t get a second glance if anyone visited them today, and most of that has to do with the progress that’s been made with website design. Websites now have to meet a number of requirements to stay competitive, and keeping up is crucial. One of those requirements, and perhaps the most important one, is whether or not the design is “responsive”.

Responsive Design 101

Responsive Design is simply a website design that caters to multiple different devices. With more than half of all online searches coming from mobile devices, having a site that only works on desktop just isn’t an option. You may have a brilliantly designed website, but if all a visitor sees on their mobile phone is blocky images and copy that’s far too small to read, chances are they won’t be trying your website again.

At a bare minimum sites need to pass the Google Mobile Friendly Test. All you have to do is put your website’s URL in the Test, and let Google do the rest. Your results will tell you whether or not you’re in the clear or have a bit of work to do.

You May be Thinking “Why Bother?”

Besides websites needing to work on a multitude of screen sizes, from a marketing perspective the ideal is for your company to have a complete mobile strategy. If you’re not reaching your customers on their mobile devices, then you may not be reaching them at all. Optimizing the design of your website is just the first step on the road to bettering your company.

Websites aren’t commodities anymore. They’re the cornerstone of thousands of modern businesses, and they can make or break your reputation. It’s not just a beauty pageant – it’s the difference between surviving and thriving.
